Transport for London (TFL) has announced that the ride app firm with about 40,000 drivers in London would no longer operate in the city after its current license expires on September 30. They declared the company unfit and not proper to hold a London private hire operator license.
TFL issued a statement saying that the decision had been made on the grounds of “public safety and security implications”.
It said it took the decision on the grounds of “public safety and security implications”.
It’s been reported that the concerns of TFL has been as a result of Uber’s approach towards reporting serious criminal offenses and their lack of adequate background checks on drivers.
Uber has however said they’d appeal against the decision.
Tom Elvidge, Uber’s general manager in London said, “By wanting to ban our app from the capital, Transport for London and the mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice.
“If this decision stands, it will put more than 40,000 licensed drivers out of work and deprive Londoners of a convenient and affordable form of transport.
“To defend the livelihoods of all those drivers, and the consumer choice of millions of Londoners who use our app, we intend to immediately challenge this in the courts.”
However, on social media, there’s been so many arguments for and against the ban with customers and drivers expressimg missed feelings.
It is expected that Uber would fight against this ban using every weapon in their arsenal.
