North Korea has never failed to display her power in nuclear weapon design and manufacture. According to the Institute for Science and International Security, North Korea was estimated to have between 13 and 30 nuclear weapons at the end of 2016. It also noted that North Korea keeps secret the number of nuclear weapons that it has built, and there is little, if any, reliable public information about this value.
The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved new sanctions on North Korea which include banning exports (lead, coal, iron and seafoods) worth over $1billion, thereby reducing her exports by one-third, and banning other countries from giving additional permits to North Korean laborers. This step was taken due to North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.
“Should the US pounce upon the DPRK with military force at last, the DPRK is ready to teach the US a severe lesson with its strategic nuclear force,” Ri Yong Ho, North Koeran Foreign Minister said while addressing a group of foreign ministers from the US, China, South Korea, Japan, and other Southeast Asian countries.
“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which the world has never seen”, Trump said on Tuesday morning.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley reacted to the sanctions, calling it “a gut punch”. She warned of possible military action if North Korea refuses to deter from the act.
“The North Korean threat … is rapidly growing more dangerous,” she told the UN Security Council after the 15-member body unanimously voted to impose new sanctions.
“Further action is required,” she added.
