It’s no secret that traveling will do a million and one things to you. It will change you, it will make you richer, it exposes you to amazing cultures, you get to eat delicacies you otherwise would never have tasted, you have new experiences, you meet new people, and equally important, you fall in love.
Hollywood does a good job of telling love stories set in Paris –of a young painter who left Australia for France; of a French maiden who boarded a train in Paris to escape a haunting past; of an eye kissing another for a second; of hearts racing with the speed of light and the beginning of a new happily ever after.
So why is it so? Why would you fall in love with a stranger when you’re nothing but a sojourner in the land? There are many reasons this happens, but two reasons strike me as very key.
1. Trust
People generally tend to trust strangers with their secrets. This is true. It’s easy to tell someone you don’t know a lot about yourself especially if you know you are never going to meet them ever again. It’s that feeling of safety, of not being judged, and of excitement. People generally want to share what’s going on in their lives. They want to be listened to. But most times, they never share. Why? We live in a very judgmental world. Everyone has an opinion about you even when they’ve never walked a mile in your shoes. They want to tell you what to do, what you should have done, and how you should have done it. They blame you, criticize you negatively, and generally put you down. And the worst if it, they’re always looking for what they’d hold against you. So most times, sharing your deepest feelings will feel like giving a dagger to an enemy to strike you. But it doesn’t feel like that with a stranger. They know you from nowhere, and are less likely to judge you. And best of it, strangers are always good listeners. This is what happens when you share a part of you with someone, unconsciously, you begin to develop an attachment with that person, especially if it’s someone that has shared in those your experiences before.
1. Freedom
The second reason is freedom. When you travel and meet someone, you lose your fear of rejection. You know you’re going to be there for a few days, so what’s there to lose? It’s either it works or not. You are bolder, and when it finally works and you meet someone, you always give the person all of your best because you know it may last for just that moment. So in the time you have left, there’s a strong bond of love and friendship that gets to be formed.
Sometimes, it goes beyond just that moment, and into something really beautiful. Forever indeed begins with a moment.
So travel, who knows, you might meet your soulmate.
