Why you should take Green Tea

Tea is the most consumed drink in the world after water. While we probably do not even understand the benefits of drinking tea, we may have heard the health benefits of drinking green tea, or maybe not. Green tea can be found as fresh leaves or in tea bags, frequently blended with other flavors such as lemon, lime or ginger.

Here are some great health benefits of green tea:

  1. Reduces Cancer Risk. Polyphenols contained in green tea fight free radicals and protect the cells from damage. According to research, drinking about 4 cups of green tea can aid in cancer (breast, lung, skin, liver, colon, and pancreas) treatment.
  2. Regulates Blood Pressure. A long-term intake of green tea is associated with improved blood pressure level. A low blood pressure leads to a decrease in coronary heart disease and stroke risks.
  3. Promotes Digestive Health and Weight Loss. Green tea offers vitamins B, C, and E which are important for digestion. Active compounds in green tea boost the effects of certain fat-burning hormones. Antioxidants also boost metabolism, eventually aiding weight loss.
  4. Improves Heart Health. Studies have shown that green tea lowers bad cholesterol level, increases the antioxidant capacity of blood which in turn prevents heart attacks. Green tea catechins inhibit the condition of atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disease.
  5. Prevents Tooth Decay and Boosts Immunity. Green tea reduces inflammation and limits the growth of certain bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. The catechins in green tea play a major role in boosting the immune system. The tea protects against oxidants and free radicals, suppressing autoimmune diseases, thereby enhancing immunity.
  6. Treats Down Syndrome. Down syndrome is caused when individuals have three copies of the chromosome number 21. Green tea was found to limit the ill effects of the third (people usually two), which is responsible for the serious symptoms of the disease.
  7. Lowers the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Green tea inhibits the activity of amylase, an enzyme that breaks down starch into simple sugars. This helps reduce the amount of sugar absorbed into the bloodstream. Polyphenols in green tea regulate glucose levels in the body, cutting diabetes risk.

With all its great health benefits, green tea contains caffeine. An equal quantity of green tea contains less caffeine than coffee but it can still act as a stimulant. Too much caffeine can disrupt sleep patterns. Green tea also contains tannins, which are capable of interfering with the absorption of iron in the body. So, it is advisable to take green tea in considerable quantities and should not be taken with iron-rich meal.

Enjoy a healthy tea!
