It’s possible that the only time your baking soda leaves the cupboard is when you want to bake. Sadly, we lock up one of the best items of the cosmetic bag in the cupboard. Baking soda is an antifungal, an antiseptic, gently exfoliates away even the toughest calluses, and tackles more smells than what is in your crisper drawer.
Here are eight great cosmetic applications of baking soda:
- Acne treatment: In case you run out of drawing or acne mask, make a little paste from water and baking soda. Apply to the spot like a treatment and it does its magic.
- Face wash: Combine one tbsp raw organic honey and one tsp baking soda in your palm and rub together. Massage the face gently in circular motions. Allow to sit on the face for a minute and rinse thoroughly with warm water. This helps exfoliate the face, removing rough dead skin and leaving a brighter skin. A harsh scrub could end up looking like a bad facial.
- Full body scrub: Just as is done with the face, the body can get a total scrub. Make a paste of baking soda, water and oatmeal for a body exfoliator. Rinse with warm water to get a nourished and refreshed body.
- Deodorant: This is one interesting part of the baking soda. Mix four tbsp baking soda with about 10 drops of any essential of your choice. Apply mixture to your underarms with a brush and you have your deodorant. Fill an empty container with it and apply anytime of the day.
- Teeth whitening: Dip a damp toothbrush into the baking soda and brush. Rinse afterwards and follow with toothpaste. For antifungal mouthwash, mix one tsp baking soda in ¼ glass of water and swish the solution through your teeth.
- Bath soak: For a relaxing end to a long day, add ½ cup of baking soda to your bath to neutralize acids on the skin and help wash away oil and perspiration while you soak. When combined with water, baking soda goes to work softening and soothing skin while calming irritants that the body brings to its surface as a result of a bite, skin irritation, or mild sunburn.
- Hair treatment form product: Sprinkle about a quarter-size of baking soda into your palm along with your favorite shampoo. Shampoo as usual and rinse thoroughly. The baking soda helps remove the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is cleaner and more manageable.
- Manicure and Pedicure: Dip a small nail brush into some baking soda and gently scrub under nails and around cuticles until clean. Then, make a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water, and rub in a gentle, circular motion over hands and fingers to exfoliate and smooth. Rinse clean with warm water and apply polish as usual. To soften the calluses, add 1 Tbsp baking soda to a basin of warm water and add a few drops of lavender oil. After a nice long soak, scrub calluses away using 3 parts baking soda, 1 part water, and 1 part brown sugar. Follow with an application of a rich moisturizer and a warm towel foot wrap. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
